St. Vincent Hospital on Tuesday held a special blessing for its new San Damiano Crucifix, which tells the story of Jesus through painted icons.

Purchase of the crucifix was made possible through a donation from Green Bay resident James Madigan, who co-founded FEECO International with his wife, Doris. James Madigan made the donation in memory of his wife, who died in 2009, according to St. Vincent.

Doris Madigan was a devout Catholic who was devoted to the work of St. Vincent Hospital, as well as numerous church-related organizations. She and James Madigan co-founded FEECO International Inc. in 1951, and she served as secretary of its board for 40 years. The Madigans had four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The 6-foot, 9-inch tall St. Vincent San Damiano Crucifix is based on an original created by an unknown Syrian monk in the 1100s. Since most people could not read, the crucifix was designed to teach religious truths through pictures, according to a history provided by St. Vincent.

The original crucifix is 7 feet high and 4 feet wide, and is venerated in the Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi, Italy. The San Damiano Crucifix held a special place in the spiritual lives of St. Francis and St. Clare, according to the hospital.

Tuesday’s blessing included introductory rites, a telling of the story of the crucifix, music and prayers. St. Vincent’s San Damiano Crucifix was created for the hospital by Sister Roberta Cusack, a Roman Catholic Franciscan Sister who lives in St. Louis.

In an intimate, private celebration at UW-Green Bay, May 12, the Madigan family, their close friends, and members of the University, remembered Doris Madigan, a devoted wife, mother and woman of influence, who had a special fondness for UW-Green Bay.

The family honored Doris with two benches in her memory that will permanently remain at the [...]]]> In an intimate, private celebration at UW-Green Bay, May 12, the Madigan family, their close friends, and members of the University, remembered Doris Madigan, a devoted wife, mother and woman of influence, who had a special fondness for UW-Green Bay.

The family honored Doris with two benches in her memory that will permanently remain at the Weidner Carillon, next to the University Union. The location is appropriate because of the long-standing friendship between the families of the Weidners and the Madigans.

A dedication plate on the bench reads, “In loving memory of Doris M. Madigan ’78 and ’83. Friend and avid supporter of UW-Green Bay. 1925-2009.”

Jim Madigan said that his wife Doris, was a great friend of the institution and passionate about higher education. She paved the way for returning adult women and earned her bachelor’s degree while in her 50s.

Their bond with UW-Green Bay began when the Madigans and Reverend Richard Mauthe worked to establish the Ecumenical Center located near the University proper. The “EC” — a non-denominational theologically-based facility — continues to enrich the lives of students and community members with lectures, social events, and worship services. Mauthe and the Madigans forged a friendship with Founding UW-Green Bay Chancellor Edward Weidner, while working on a land trade for the EC.

The Madigan’s daughter, Cindy Bell, said her mom prided herself on earning both of her degrees as an adult learner, and was an inspiration to many. Like their mom, Bell (1975) and her brothers David (1985) and Jim Jr. (1980), earned their bachelor’s degrees at UW-Green Bay.

Doris Madigan was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Social Change and Development with honors, and later completed her master’s degree in Environmental Arts and Sciences. Her passion for lifelong learning led to a life interest in genealogy, and research trips to Germany, Austria, and Ireland.

The Madigans were founding members and served for many years on UW-Green Bay’s Board of Visitors and the UW-Green Bay Founders Association. They were also active on the Ecumenical Center board. The list of Doris’s activities outside of campus borders is lengthy and distinguished. Among them, she was named a Lady Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre by Pope Paul VI and was invested in St. Louis, Mo., by Cardinal John Carberry in 1978.

Doris and Jim are the founders of Feeco International, located just minutes from campus, which continues its strong relationship with the University through private support, hiring UW-Green Bay alumni, involving UW-Green Bay faculty members in research, and hosting UW-Green Bay interns. The company is owned by the Madigan’s, son, Dan.

Imagine your average compost heap.  Items such as wilted lettuce leaves or leftover banana peels probably figure in the picture somewhere.  Steel dust or unused industrial chemicals more than likely do not.  For Green Bay company Feeco International however, metal dust and other wastes do have a place in the pile.

Any company with a waste generation problem, from steel mills to municipalities to farmers, is a potential Feeco customer.  Feeco has worked with companies everywhere from across the street to across the globe, from South Africa’s gold and diamond mines and Australian chicken farmers to the dairy farms and meat-packing plants of Wisconsin’s own Brown County.

The Environmental Management and [...]]]> Popular perception long has been that business and environmental protection are about as compatible as Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow.

It doesn’t have to be that way, say those behind a still-new certificate program at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. The Environmental Management and Business Institute marries the studies of the two together.

“It used to be that you didn’t take business courses if you majored in environmental science, and you didn’t take environmental science courses if you majored in business,” says John Stoll, professor of public and environmental affairs at UWGB and co-director of EMBI.

Now business majors feel they should have background in environmental systems and vice versa, he adds.

EMBI offers an 18-credit certificate, which includes an internship.  Many of the internships arise from a company calling UWGB with an environmental-related problem or issue, while others are focused on opportunities at UW–Green Bay.

Instead of just courses in business or science, EMBI puts the topics in terms of their relevance in the real world, according to one UWGB alumnus.

“It shows why reducing pollution is a good business choice,” says Nick Reckinger, who graduated in 2005 with a degree in business, an emphasis in finance and a minor in environmental science, and a master’s degree in environmental science and policy in 2007.

Reducing pollution usually means using less fuel, which usually means saving money. Reducing waste or pollution also means smaller fines (or no more fines) for disposing of toxic waste, Reckinger points out.

“Right now there isn’t a huge regulatory burden on a lot of small companies, but a lot of companies will be facing the need to look at sustainability and record their carbon footprints,” he says. “With the EMBI program, you’d be well-suited to do this kind of work.”

SUBHEAD: Solving corporate problems

EMBI didn’t exist when Reckinger attended UWGB, but he says it would have made his studies a lot easier.

“I took business classes as my core, and I took environmental science, but it was hard to draw any connection between the two,” says Reckinger.

With EMBI, classes focusing on both are written into the syllabus.

“It would have been a huge help to me to draw those connections,” he says.

Reckinger uses his degrees in environmental science in his career in systems sales at FEECO International. FEECO is a Green Bay manufacturer of equipment and systems that transform waste from industries like farming, paper and the steel industry into usable materials. Manure from farms is one of the main types of waste conversion — FEECO and its offshoot company, ENCAP, make it into fertilizer pellets and garden additives.

“There are thousands of farms that have this problem” of too much manure, says Reckinger. “One of the main reasons I was brought into the company was to have ‘green’ eyes on the project.”

Converting thousands of pounds of steel dust from the steel industry into usable steel keeps it out of the landfills, Reckinger says.

“Many companies have products that go into landfills, and we come up with ways to re-introduce that material” into the supply chain, he says.

UWGB senior Angela Koenig, 21, an environmental policy and planning major, is working in an internship focusing on green retail at the Packer Pro Shop. She’s working with pro-shop management to see what can be done to encourage vendors and suppliers to minimize their use of non-reusable packaging.

“Lambeau Field is such a big piece of this city that it’s a good place to start getting the public thinking about sustainability,” says Koenig

It’s growing more and more necessary for business people to understand science and for science to understand business, says John Katers, associate professor of natural and applied sciences and engineering at UWGB and co-director of EMBI.

“As you develop environmental policy, typically you have to understand the science behind it,” he says. “You can’t operate in a vacuum; you need interaction. You need all players at the table.”

SUBHEAD: Corporations leading green movement

“The historical perspective is that making money and keeping the environment are mutually exclusive,” says Katers. “But businesses are beginning to realize that without natural resources, they aren’t going to stay in business for very long.”

In fact, some even say that big companies like Walmart are leading the way in cleaning up the environment by forcing their suppliers to track and reduce their carbon footprints, Stoll says.

“Because they are such a large business, they are actually driving a lot of the action,” he says.

Kaity Gilles, 21, a junior double-majoring in environmental planning and policy and public administration and minoring in political science, says business and the environment actually go hand in hand because environmental issues are going to affect businesses in the future.

“Businesses can save money and keep the environment in their consciousness,” she says. “A lot of things businesses should be doing to be sustainable are things that will eventually save them money.”

EMBI aims to connect business with science and science with business — and to connect both of them to the community. EMBI may offer minicourses to business groups and citizens who want to learn more about how business and nature impact each other, Stoll and Katers say.

EMBI is an undergraduate program. It doesn’t offer a degree but rather a certificate.

“Students look at this as something that might differentiate them from other students that have the same degree,” says Katers.

The program has garnered a lot of interest, even though it hasn’t been publicized and its class offerings haven’t appeared in the school’s catalog of classes yet.

“We are getting a lot of returning adult students and people who work for companies such as Kimberly–Clark, Banta Publishing (now R.R. Donnelley) printing and Oshkosh Corp., who get the itch to work their way through the process” toward a certificate or degree in an environmental sciences program, says Stoll.

SUBHEAD: From waste to fuel

Katers’ students have worked on several renewable energy projects, including studying and comparing different anaerobic digesters on local dairy farms. Anaerobic digestion is a process that can convert manure and other organic wastes into methane gas. Focus on Energy awarded the school a $23,000 grant for the digester-monitoring project.

“We have a lot of farmers looking at different manure management technologies,” says Katers.

Other methods have been looked at that transform the remaining solids into animal bedding and fertilizer pellets, Katers says. A $48,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection allowed students to work on manure separation trials in the laboratory and at a local dairy farm. Some of their research was used by the Brown County Waste Transformation Initiative, which sought to launch a waste transformation facility that would make use of the county’s countless millions of pounds of manure.

Katers and Stoll hope that five years from now, EMBI will be the hub for all campus and community environmental activities.

“There’s an effort in place right now to brand Northeast Wisconsin as sustainable,” says Katers, “and we’d like to be the go-to place for that.”

Her thesis, “Technical and Economic Feasibility of Solid-liquid Separation for Digested Dairy Manure with Polymer Treatment,” was supervised by Prof. John [...]]]> Graduate student Annette Pelegrin of Pulaski is this year’s winner of the UW-Green Bay Outstanding Thesis Award.

Pelegrin will receive her master’s degree in May in Environmental Science and Policy. Her thesis, “Technical and Economic Feasibility of Solid-liquid Separation for Digested Dairy Manure with Polymer Treatment,” was supervised by Prof. John Katers. Pelegrin will be presented the award at the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association awards program Saturday evening, April 17, at the Weidner Center.

Pelegrin’s project, which aims to make manure management more cost-effective and eco-friendly by better separating liquids from solids, was accomplished with the help of an Agricultural Development and Diversification Grant from Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Partners in the grant included two local companies, ENCAP and FEECO International, with additional support from Green Valley Dairy, Krakow, where testing took place.

Pelegrin holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from UW-Madison. She is completing final coursework for her UW-Green Bay master’s degree this semester.

Her research seeks to enhance anaerobic digestion systems already in place for managing manure on many large dairy farms. Pelegrin noted that, along with renewable energy in the form of biogas, anaerobic digestion produces nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer; unfortunately, the commercial value is somewhat limited because liquids are relatively more cumbersome and costly to handle.

Pelegrin’s project, then, seeks ways to improve on conventional mechanical separators that leave a significant amount of nutrients suspended in liquid. She evaluated water-treatment polymers for capturing the remaining solids and nutrients in digested dairy manure.  With her own polymer formula and a using a benchtop rotating drum as a separator in the lab, she went on to work with ENCAP and FEECO to develop a full-scale test at Green Valley Dairy.

After separation, the solids were transported to FEECO where they were dried and pelletized into a fertilizer product.

Making wonders out of wastes

UW-Green Bay graduates, graduate students and even some undergraduates don’t have to travel far to get on-the-job training at “green” companies.

FEECO International and the ENCAP Corporation are just down the road from campus near the intersection of Highways 54/57 and Algoma Road.

That’s there where new technologies are developed to take otherwise waste material—from manure to metal shavings—and make it into something usable and profitable for corporations worldwide.

FEECO International makes industrial equipment to agglomerate, or pelletize, materials that may once have been destined for the landfills.

ENCAP, a spin-off company developed by FEECO, mixes waste from paper mills and other sources with polymers to promote grass and flower growth while at the same time preventing excessive runoff.

Both companies have used UW-Green Bay students, and have hired UW-Green Bay alumni, to help keep the Earth a greener place to live.

“It’s very good to know that I am at a company that’s trying to be green, and that’s trying to do all things environmentally friendly,” said FEECO research specialist Adam Baldwin, a 2008 master’s grad in Environmental Science and Policy. “I’m very proud of that fact. That’s something that’s very important to me.”

Classmate and colleague Nick Reckinger is a sales consultant for FEECO. He, too, wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t a greener company.

“I’d find it very hard to work for a company that I felt wasn’t working toward a good cause, or a cause that is improving our environment for the next generation,” said Reckinger, also a 2008 Environmental Science and Policy master’s grad. “Coming here, it’s been very exciting to work on a number of different projects that I can get very passionate about… and know that my contribution to the projects will really be making a difference.”

The two companies work closely with UW-Green Bay professors, seeking advice on projects and finding the best students to provide research help and ideas for the next great products.

“We have a tremendous respect for, and a great relationship with, the faculty at UW-Green Bay, particularly in the Environmental Sciences,” said Jeff Rindfleisch, ENCAP vice president of operations and research and development. “They’re a great resource for us and a wealth of information for us in helping develop our technology.

“Secondly, they also serve as a source for students for us and we’ve had a number of students come through ENCAP in doing their master’s thesis and providing long-term potential for opportunities for employment.”

Green companies and green technologies could be the wave of the future, and training in environmental and business issues should bode well in the working world, both Baldwin and Reckinger said.

“The sky is the limit for any company that’s going into this arena—the environmental aspect—because there are so many problems out there now and the solutions are not always there,” Baldwin said. “It’s the old tried-and-true right now. But if some company comes up with a very good process or idea for environmental problems, I think it’s all the better for the world in general.”

And UW-Green Bay is the place where solutions to some of those problems were, are, and will be developed.
