Feeco, which started in 1951 as a fertilizer equipment and engineering company, has grown progressively greener over the last two decades. Feeco has a strong interest in environmental management; it concerns itself more with renewable materials than renewable energy. Two of its main types of technology are thermal processing, as used in rotary dryers, kilns and coolers, and agglomeration, which goes hand in hand with thermal equipment.

Feeco has likened its work to a large-scale, high-quality version of composting. Many of Feeco’s projects involve keeping potentially valuable wastes such as metal dust, various chemicals and sludges out of local landfills, reusing them in environmentally-friendly ways instead of discarding them. This not only reduces land and water contamination, but also decreases both waste transportation and future clean-up costs.

Popular perception long has been that business and environmental protection are about as compatible as Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow.

It doesn’t have to be that way, say those behind a still-new certificate program at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. The Environmental Management and Business Institute marries the studies of the two together.

“It used to be that you didn’t take business courses if you majored in environmental science, and you didn’t take environmental science courses if you majored in business,” says John Stoll, professor of public and environmental affairs at UWGB and co-director of EMBI.

Now business majors feel they should have background in environmental systems and vice versa, he adds.

EMBI offers an 18-credit certificate, which includes an internship. Many of the internships arise from a company calling UWGB with an environmental-related problem or issue, while others are focused on opportunities at UW–Green Bay.

Instead of just courses in business or science, EMBI puts the topics in terms of their relevance in the real world, according to one UWGB alumnus.

“It shows why reducing pollution is a good business choice,” says Nick Reckinger, who graduated in 2005 with a degree in business, an emphasis in finance and a minor in environmental science, and a master’s degree in environmental science and policy in 2007.

Reducing pollution usually means using less fuel, which usually means saving money. Reducing waste or pollution also means smaller fines (or no more fines) for disposing of toxic waste, Reckinger points out.

“Right now there isn’t a huge regulatory burden on a lot of small companies, but a lot of companies will be facing the need to look at sustainability and record their carbon footprints,” he says. “With the EMBI program, you’d be well-suited to do this kind of work.”

SUBHEAD: Solving corporate problems

EMBI didn’t exist when Reckinger attended UWGB, but he says it would have made his studies a lot easier.

“I took business classes as my core, and I took environmental science, but it was hard to draw any connection between the two,” says Reckinger.

With EMBI, classes focusing on both are written into the syllabus.

“It would have been a huge help to me to draw those connections,” he says.

Reckinger uses his degrees in environmental science in his career in systems sales at FEECO International. FEECO is a Green Bay manufacturer of equipment and systems that transform waste from industries like farming, paper and the steel industry into usable materials. Manure from farms is one of the main types of waste conversion — FEECO and its offshoot company, ENCAP, make it into fertilizer pellets and garden additives.

“There are thousands of farms that have this problem” of too much manure, says Reckinger. “One of the main reasons I was brought into the company was to have ‘green’ eyes on the project.”

Converting thousands of pounds of steel dust from the steel industry into usable steel keeps it out of the landfills, Reckinger says.

“Many companies have products that go into landfills, and we come up with ways to re-introduce that material” into the supply chain, he says.

UWGB senior Angela Koenig, 21, an environmental policy and planning major, is working in an internship focusing on green retail at the Packer Pro Shop. She’s working with pro-shop management to see what can be done to encourage vendors and suppliers to minimize their use of non-reusable packaging.

“Lambeau Field is such a big piece of this city that it’s a good place to start getting the public thinking about sustainability,” says Koenig

It’s growing more and more necessary for business people to understand science and for science to understand business, says John Katers, associate professor of natural and applied sciences and engineering at UWGB and co-director of EMBI.

“As you develop environmental policy, typically you have to understand the science behind it,” he says. “You can’t operate in a vacuum; you need interaction. You need all players at the table.”

SUBHEAD: Corporations leading green movement

“The historical perspective is that making money and keeping the environment are mutually exclusive,” says Katers. “But businesses are beginning to realize that without natural resources, they aren’t going to stay in business for very long.”

In fact, some even say that big companies like Walmart are leading the way in cleaning up the environment by forcing their suppliers to track and reduce their carbon footprints, Stoll says.

“Because they are such a large business, they are actually driving a lot of the action,” he says.

Kaity Gilles, 21, a junior double-majoring in environmental planning and policy and public administration and minoring in political science, says business and the environment actually go hand in hand because environmental issues are going to affect businesses in the future.

“Businesses can save money and keep the environment in their consciousness,” she says. “A lot of things businesses should be doing to be sustainable are things that will eventually save them money.”

EMBI aims to connect business with science and science with business — and to connect both of them to the community. EMBI may offer minicourses to business groups and citizens who want to learn more about how business and nature impact each other, Stoll and Katers say.

EMBI is an undergraduate program. It doesn’t offer a degree but rather a certificate.

“Students look at this as something that might differentiate them from other students that have the same degree,” says Katers.

The program has garnered a lot of interest, even though it hasn’t been publicized and its class offerings haven’t appeared in the school’s catalog of classes yet.

“We are getting a lot of returning adult students and people who work for companies such as Kimberly–Clark, Banta Publishing (now R.R. Donnelley) printing and Oshkosh Corp., who get the itch to work their way through the process” toward a certificate or degree in an environmental sciences program, says Stoll.

SUBHEAD: From waste to fuel

Katers’ students have worked on several renewable energy projects, including studying and comparing different anaerobic digesters on local dairy farms. Anaerobic digestion is a process that can convert manure and other organic wastes into methane gas. Focus on Energy awarded the school a $23,000 grant for the digester-monitoring project.

“We have a lot of farmers looking at different manure management technologies,” says Katers.

Other methods have been looked at that transform the remaining solids into animal bedding and fertilizer pellets, Katers says. A $48,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection allowed students to work on manure separation trials in the laboratory and at a local dairy farm. Some of their research was used by the Brown County Waste Transformation Initiative, which sought to launch a waste transformation facility that would make use of the county’s countless millions of pounds of manure.

Katers and Stoll hope that five years from now, EMBI will be the hub for all campus and community environmental activities.

This second annual event will celebrate Earth Day and bring together internationally renowned experts as well as local panelists including David Wann to present and discuss key issues regarding business and sustainability. Important topics being discussed include: sustainability in transportation, wind energy, regional health, regional sustainability and water management – an update on the Fox River clean-up progress.

FEECO has developed solutions to minimize and control Phosphates from entering the watershed via Agricultural, Municipal, and Industrial processes.

Green Bay, WI (July 1, 2009)- FEECO an industry leader of fertilizer, material handling, and organic waste solutions is currently working with Brown County on the Brown County Waste Transformation Initiative (BCWTI). The principle of the project is to be able to take the county’s organic waste, process it and sell it around the world as nutrient-rich, pathogen-free fertilizer.

“Making fertilizer out of waste is nothing novel for FEECO International – short for Fertilizer Engineering and Equipment Company – already does this on a bigger scale. The 58-year old company builds equipment, systems and facilities around the world that make fertilizer pellets out of animal waste,” states Dan Madigan FEECO’s President.

Phosphorous is a needed element in agricultural growth, but being able to control the levels that are spread onto the soils of different watersheds is the key. “Phosphate Mining is a key concept,” states Madigan some areas are overloaded and taking on yearly amounts of phosphates that severely impact their ecosystem while there are areas that do not have an adequate amount to aid in their agricultural growth.

FEECO’s solution tackles the issue at the source and allows for an economical distribution system that will help the Environment and the Markets. It is all based around an Eco-Centristic philosophy, providing a balance between what is needed in the market and what is best for the environment.

FEECO International isn’t reinventing the wheel. It’s following a similar business model it did when it formed the offshoot company ENCAP, says FEECO’s Vice President and General Manager Lee Hoffmann.

ENCAP takes unrecyclable waste from the paper industry – pulps and fibers that have been recycled so many times that they can’t be made into paper again – and creates a wide variety of garden products by encapsulating it with seeds, lime, gypsum and other ingredients in a way that minimizes runoff, Hoffmann says. Its products are sold worldwide.

Humans do it, animals do it, factories do it. Even cells do it.

Producing waste is just one of those unavoidable evils – right up there with facing our mortality and being accountable to the Internal Revenue Service. But what happens to all the waste we and our fellow biological beings produce, and – no pun intended — where do we go with it?

The Brown County Waste Transformation Initiative (BCWTI) has come up with a possible answer: Process it and sell it around the world as nutrient-rich, pathogen-free fertilizer nuggets.

“It’s a win-win for everyone involved,” says Brown County Executive Tom Hinz. “We will be cleaning up the environment and generating a product that can be sold on the market, while creating jobs at the same time. It’s a situation you don’t see all that frequently.”

The BCWTI, a project led and supported by county and private enterprise, is slated to “take waste and turn it into an asset, pelletizing it and shipping it out to other places in the world that need nutrients,” says Jayme Sellen, legislative assistant for Hinz.

Not reinventing the wheel Making fertilizer out of waste is nothing novel for a local company involved in the BCWTI. FEECO International – short for Fertilizer Engineering and Equipment Company – already does this on a bigger scale. The 58-yearold company builds equipment, systems and facilities around the world that make fertilizer pellets out of animal waste.

Because it’s 90 percent water, shipping the raw material is impractical. So it makes sense to dry it out first, which FEECO does. “The heart of the system is a paddle mixer and a rotary dryer,” says FEECO International Vice President and General Manager Lee Hoffmann.

One of FEECO International’s current projects in Australia is for a Japanese firm that owns a 250,000-animal beef-farming operation. The waste transformation plant FEECO International is building there will produce 100,000 metric tons of pellet fertilizer per year, Hoffmann says.

Compared to that waste situation, Brown County’s manure production pales. “The challenge we have in Brown County is that we have (farm manure) waste, but not enough to build a (waste transformation) plant,” Hoffmann says.

That’s precisely why the project is called waste transformation instead of manure transformation. It uses waste from the metropolitan sewerage districts and slaughterhouses in addition to manure.

The waste for the local project would come from:
· Two Green Bay beef processing plants – each of which emit three kinds of waste (barn manure, paunch or undigested food from the slaughtered animals’ stomachs, and liquid); and
· Biosolids from two metropolitan sewer systems – Green Bay and De Pere.
· Manure from dairy and cattle operations.

Partners in the BCWTI project development include FEECO International; ENCAP; Sanimax; American Foods Group; JBS Packerland (formerly Smithfield Beef); Daanen & Janssen, Inc., Ag Ventures, LLC; Brown County Land & Conservation Department; Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce; Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District; and the De Pere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

But FEECO International isn’t creating the world from dust in seven days. It’s following a similar business model it did when it formed the offshoot company ENCAP, says Hoffmann.

Its products are sold nationwide.

Where is the manure coming from?
The issue of animal waste and what to do with it worked out better in our grandparents’ day, when farms were smaller, with fewer animals and more land, and there were more of them. Each farm could use its own animals’ manure for its own crops.

But that model didn’t prove profitable enough in an era of global trading and stiff competition. Many farmers either got out of farming or expanded into large farms – some with hundreds or thousands of animals and less land. These farms are known by many names – confined- animal feeding operations (CAFOs), mega-farms, factory farms to name a few – but the upshot is the same as far as the environment is concerned.

“The bottom line is we are running out of farm land and ways to take care of this waste and we can’t afford to lose our packing plants,” Hinz says. “If anything, we need to increase production at the packing plants.”

Between 1991 and 2001, Brown County’s cattle population grew by 6,900. During the same period of time, its total farmland area shrunk by 22,000 harvestable acres, according to Brad Holtz, agronomist with the Brown County Land and Water Conservation Department.

Cows produce 18 times the waste of humans. That means a 1,000-animal megafarm yields as much waste as the municipal sewer for a city the population of De Pere and that the nearly 7,000 cattle adds to the county’s cattle population between 1991 and 2001 adds waste the equivalent of a metro area with almost 126,000 people.

That’s a lot of waste to process, and it doesn’t include the amount of industrial waste produced from slaughterhouses.

Holtz cites a recent marketing survey of 50 Wisconsin farmers that identified waste as a roadblock to their expansion. “From smallest to largest they all says pretty much unanimously that the biggest problem was what they called a manure bottleneck,” Holtz says. “If the status quo is maintained, they will be hauling their manure farther, which is expensive, or face the challenges of managing the waste stream from that base.”

So why can’t we spread it on our fields?
Crops can only absorb so much fertilizer and nutrients before they’re saturated. Too many nutrients can be as bad as not enough, says Holtz.

Like the human body processing vitamins and minerals, the earth rejects an excess of certain nutrients. For humans, too much of a water-soluble vitamin such as Vitamin C gets excreted through urine. Too much of a fat-soluble vitamin, such as Vitamin A, D or E, gets stored in the fat and liver and can become toxic if there’s too much of it.

The earth is similar to the human body in this way. “When we apply more nutrients to the plants than the plants can utilize, it attaches itself to the sediment, and when the sediment leaves the fields, it gets into the surface water and causes problems,” Holtz says.

The No. 1 problem nutrient for our area is too much phosphorous, Holtz adds. Although phosphorous is a natural nutrient that occurs in soil, it’s a trace mineral, which means most living things need only a tiny amount of the stuff. Most of the phosphorous found in soil is in a fixed form, which means it’s not available for plant use, Holtz says. So when phosphorous is applied to crops via manure or bone meal, runoff of phosphorous happens.

“We know from years and years of studies in other counties and in Northeast Wisconsin is that one of the issues is that phosphorous can get in the surface water,” says Holtz.

Surface water includes rivers, streams and lakes. It gets contaminated when runoff from farm land, roads and lawns flows into the storm sewers and ultimately into the surface water. “Once it gets into the water, it causes algae blooms,” Holtz says Algae blooms compete with fish and other plants for oxygen in the water and end up killing fish and other marine life and causing smelly, green water.

So how much too much phosphorous does Brown County produce? Holtz says that, based on “back-of-the-envelope calculations,” Brown County produces 194,000 more pounds of phosphorous per year than the area can possibly use.

Brick and mortar facility?
The initiative landed the BCWTI a $30,000 grant from the University of Wisconsin Systems Solid Waste Research Council for field trials. FEECO International made 6,000 tons of fertilizer pellets in mid-April as a trial using the combined sources of waste, Hoffmann says.

The trial is underway on three plots of land in Brown County, Holtz says. They’ll be testing and monitoring the land closely.

If all goes as expected – and there’s an 80 percent chance it will, says Hoffmann – the BCWTI could result in a plant that would serve as the official waste transformation plant for the area. It would produce around 17,000 tons of fertilizer, Hoffmann says.

Hoffmann says the plant – estimated initially at around $5 million to build – would employ between 15 and 20 people. He’s mum on potential locations, though, and says who would actually own such a plant is still being mulled over. “We are still investigating the best structure for ownership,” Hoffmann says.

FEECO has agreed to build the waste transformation plant, should it come to fruition, he says.

So far, three of the stakeholders – ENCAP, Daanen & Janssen and AgVentures—have indicated a desire to take the transformed fertilizer product to market, Hoffmann says.

He adds that they’re still trying to gauge which of the waste-producing stakeholders would want to own or run such a plant.

Meanwhile, Hinz is eager to see the plan go forward. Having the BCWTI in place would allow dairies and cattle operations to expand, he says, because it would answer the question of what to do with all of the waste. “From a dairy standpoint, it would allow better compatibility, to allow cows and humans to live together,” Hinz says.

By Judy Brown

Correspondent

Chilton, WI (February 4, 2009) – With the highest cattle density in northeastern Wisconsin and urban sprawl sprawling, Brown County has accelerated its investigation into how to handle growing amounts of dairy manure and industrial wastes spread on a diminishing land base.

Applying waste on limited crop acreage has led to groundwater contamination issues and pollution problems of lower Green Bay.

The solution lies in a value-added pelleted fertilizer, county officials said Jan. 30 at the quarterly meeting of the Glacierland Resource Conservation and Development Council.

Brown County Executive Tom Hintz said commercial development of the project that’s in the feasibility stage could add to the county’s $3 billion dairy industry that provides jobs for 10 percent of the county’s workforce.

“I truly believe in this project,” Hintz said.

The Brown County Waste Transformation Project will work to deal with the issue of managing livestock and industrial wastes, which has been a challenge for many years. The issue grew in the past few years when more and more contaminated wells were reported.

Brown County has 90,000 dairy animal units, which ideally would require 225,000 acres of cropland for manure disposal. In 2007, Brown County assessors said the county has 170,000 crop acres to handle manure.

The county Land Conservation Department identified 26 companies that apply waste to Brown County land. That list includes vegetable and dairy processors, septic service companies, municipal wastewater treatment facilities and meatpacking plants.

When the county LCD staff began casting for answers to their challenge, they found two companies in the Green Bay area that had technologies that could convert organic waste streams from municipal, industrial or agricultural sources to pelletized pathogen-free fertilizer.

The companies are FEECO and ENCAP.

“I think we have the opportunity to make this into a green industry,” said Bill Hafs, county conservationist.

If the idea flourishes, he said, it would have implications in other counties that face growing pressures from the ability to handle manure and maintain water quality.

“A lot of our factories are bringing their waste to your counties,” Hafs said.

One meat processor in Green Bay takes waste materials to a landfill near Hilbert in Calumet County, council members were told.

The project has raised $250,000 to carry out the study in transforming agricultural and industrial wastes into a value-added product.

Brad Holtz of the LCD said studies show the fertilizer is useful in applying nutrients to the land and in erosion control.

John Katers, a UW-Green Bay environmental engineer, described how the product will prove to be useful.

“We are taking landfill products that historically had zero value and are turning it into a product that has demand in the marketplace,” Katers said.

While the project is in the study stage, he said, additional investigations would address how to efficiently handle dairy manure to transport components to a central location.

One area of study looks at separating dairy manure that would leave producers with a liquid high in nitrogen and low in phosphorous. The study also will evaluate the feasibility of a mobile separator that would go from farm to farm, Katers said.

The study also will examine how to bring dairy waste material to a central location with an anaerobic manure digester on site.

In that way, Katers said, green technology from the digester could produce the energy to produce a green fertilizer because the biggest cost in fertilizer production in the plant is the heat for the dryer.

He said the appeal of the process that turns waste into pellets of fertilizer is attractive to industrial and commercial sources that now pay tipping fees to unload their wastes and are also held to environmental liability standards.

Both of those issues would disappear with the emergence of the technology on a commercial scale, Katers said.

While no location has been selected for a production plant, nor have the logistics been ironed out as to who would own or operate such a plant, Katers expects a plant will be operating in Brown County in a few years.

It’s an idea that’s likely to be accepted in other locations, he said, because it’s a technology that reduces phosphorous loss and sediment and landowners gain the fertilizer benefits.

FEECO creates new Manufacturing Marketplace to help “Bring Global Relationships Together”

Green Bay, WI (January 1, 2008)- FEECO International just launched MFG.FEECO.com which is a global online manufacturing network that provides registered companies an opportunity to submit bids on open RFQs. Unlike most manufacturing networks, FEECO’s manufacturing marketplace lets suppliers register and submit bids on open RFQs for free – with no annual supplier fee!

Manufacturing has in the past relied on relationships as the sole means of marketing to buyers. Now, the online marketplace has changed manufacturing and has leveled the playing field for suppliers and shops. Jobs that use to be sourced locally are being opened up on a global level.

MFG.FEECO.com is your connection to free high-quality leads that are “Bringing Global Relationships Together” and can help your company grow.

It only takes a few minutes to create a free supplier account and select your areas of expertise (ranging from: bearings, sheaves, v-belts, conveyor idler rolls, gear reducers, motors, bag houses, silos, fans, blowers, fabricators, conveyor belt and pulleys, belt alignment controls, plugged chute detectors, safety stop controls, belt v-plows, switches, burners, screw conveyors, refractory installers, fluid bed dryers, sprockets, etc…). When FEECO has a RFQ that matches your criteria they will email you an invitation to bid. It’s that easy, why not register and expand your companies’ presence across the globe.

FEECO International, Inc. a Wisconsin based business is featured in the US Industry Today Magazine. The article entitled “Fertile Business” is based on how FEECO has added innovative value to a re-vitalized ethanol industry

Green Bay, WI (September 24, 2007)- FEECO International, Inc. is featured in the US Industry Today Magazines current issue. The article entitled “Fertile Business” is based on how FEECO International provides a range of customized engineering, equipment, manufacturing and construction services for the power / utility, paper, fertilizer, chemical processing, mining, and other related industries around the world. David Soyka reports on synergies developed from over a half century of engineering problem solving that add innovative value to a re-vitalized ethanol industry.

One way in which FEECO brings value to the industry is in its development of a versatile, more energy efficient system to process distillers’ dried grains with solubles (DDGS) from the ethanol process. With more than 40 years’ experience designing and fabricating counter-flow rotary drum coolers and rotary dryers FEECO has introduced the counter-flow rotary cooler for DDGS to the ethanol industry, having demonstrated expertise and understanding of the subtle difference between rotary drum counter-flow coolers and co-flow dryers. FEECO combines this expertise with a reputation for robust construction to provide an efficient, effective counter-flow cooler. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

FEECO is convinced that the ethanol business model can be financially improved and has the ability and expertise to prove it to anyone who wants to work with them. Everyone out there is building ethanol plants with their main revenue stream coming from the sale of ethanol. The by-products of the plant either show up in the expense line or have minimal impact on their income statement. FEECO looks to see if it can generate new and innovative products that really add to the bottom line.

FEECO is certain that the energy balance in the ethanol industry has room for dramatic improvements and currently is working diligently on a new dryer conception. In addition to the rotary cooling and drying industry, two other drying technologies may also streamline the byproducts into more efficient conversion to solids. This testing is currently taking place in a lab environment with commitments for commercialization set for 2008. If FEECO is proven right on the first of these technologies, it will significantly alter the energy balance. If it is right on the second technology, it will have industry shattering results.
